The Origin of Christmas in July

G. JaVaughn Troxler, D.Min.

Christmas in July began 1933 at Keystone Camp in Brevard, North Carolina. The camp celebrated by performing carols, hosting Santa, serving cotton candy, and other gifts. It became a Summer escape and the 1940 movie is often shown during Hallmark’s snowy movie marathons. The first event was held July 24th and 25th in the year 1933.

The current director of the all-girl summer camp (Keystone Camp), Page Ives Lemuel stated that she assumed that other camps celebrated Christmas during the warm months as well. This was not true. At the time, only Brevard, North Carolina did such. Ms. Lemuel described Fannie Holt as whimsical character. Fannie Holt was the founder of the event. Over the years they added reindeer, Mrs. Clause, and elves.

Christmas in July is celebrated all over the world on July 25th. Some countries in the northern hemisphere who celebrate it are, Italy, Denmark, USA, Canada, and Sardinia. Countries in the southern hemisphere that celebrate are South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

Similar connections to the idea are as follows. In 1894, the opera, Werther referred in a song that translated says, “When you sing Christmas in July, you rush the season.” There is no way of knowing if Holt used this as an idea. In the 1940 film, Christmas in July, a man was tricked into believing he had won $25,000. He generously bought gifts for his friends, family, neighbors, and bought his girlfriend an engagement ring.

In 1942, the Washington D.C., Calvary Baptist Church began holding a Christmas sermon, carols, and worship in July. The pastor attributed it to a similar event done at his former church in Philadelphia. There, it was used to gather presents for world missions. It gave the church time organized and ship the presents around the world before Christmas.

Since 1950, the United States has used Christmas in July as a way for greeting cards to advertise and spread cheer in July. Commercially, Hallmark Channel runs a movie marathon, Hallmark stores sell ornaments during this time, and QVC runs Christmas in July sales.

As a ministry outreach, Christmas in July is an awesome opportunity to bring cheer to others. Christmas carols often bring joyous nostalgia. Christmas.

Biography

The Reverend JaVaughn Troxler grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina. He has lived in the Triangle for the past twenty-one years. Dr. Troxler has been serving at Mount Vernon Baptist Church for six years as the youth and young adult minister.

Outside of the church, Reverend Troxler works with adults who live on the autism spectrum. Reverend Troxler graduated from Greensboro College, Shaw University, and one month ago earned the Doctor of Ministry with a pastoral vocational emphasis from Campbell University. He has been married for nineteen years to Durham native, Nikisha Finch Troxler. Of many scriptures he treasures, the simplest is in the gospel of John chapter 5, verse 6, “Wilt thou be made whole?” or “Do you want to be healed?” This is a continual reminder to self-evaluate and ask Jesus for help, before you lose faith without realizing it.
